So, this is a 'Blog' page to quickly show to the pupils what one might look like and how it might be utilised.
A 'Blog', as the pupils now know a contraction from 'Web Log', is similar to an online diary; recording just about anything you may wish to record in your life. As one pupil (MA) said, there's also a 'Vlog' - Video log; which follows the same principles but using the moving picture to aid in the recording of information.
Now diaries, as a Mr S Pepys perhaps should have known, are dangerous things and can last way beyond your own lifetime. Just a few short years ago, it was all paper diaries with little locks and catches on them, perhaps with a large 'DO NOT READ' sign on them.
Now, it is usually done on line and on a personal site created for that purpose or as part of a wider site, as it is here. You can look at places like FaceBook, Instagram, Twitter and the like as new versions of old diaries - but they all have one or two main things in common.
A name you use to communicate your thoughts and experiences.
Online.
Forever.
Think of it.
Just a moment.
Think of it.
Things you write today (when a mere 50 something year old) can be still around recorded by groups, organisations and companies 25, 50 or even 100 years from now.
In the very short term, from just a few details of things that you write, it is possible to make a guess about where you live, what school you might go to, and how old you are. What hobbies you have, what brothers or sisters you might have and even where you like to go on holiday.
Keeping safe means being aware of potential dangers. Not to be overcautious as such but think of it like this;
You like to play football.
You are good at it.
You have a ball and a few friends to play with.
Now, you can play on the side of the road, in your street which is neither fun when you fall over (as I did a lot) nor safe (due to cars and lorries) or you can play on a playground,
You may still hurt yourself, or lose the game, but you will be a lot safer than playing the same game in the street.
We are going to try to give you some tips and ideas of how to do what you'd like to do online, while keeping yourself as safe as possible and away from potential dangers (car, lorries, buses and the like) in the meantime. Think of us as your football pitch grounds people....
